Border Report: How Immigration Status Restricts Homeownership
Undocumented immigrants in the United States face a lot of difficulty in home ownership. Over the years, laws and bills have been passed and discussed on the issue of undocumented immigrants. Recently, a California Bill was proposed, that would have allowed undocumented immigrants who apply for loans under a California Programme to buy homes. However, the bill was vetoed.
Back in 2013, AB 60 Law was passed in California which allows undocumented immigrants to be issued driver’s licenses. However, it was noticed that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement used these licenses to trace them.
This issue was faced by many of Ginger Jacobs’, a San Diego Immigration lawyer’s clients. She stated that this problem would not have been caused by the new California bill that would have helped people become homeowners, as it did not call for database creation of undocumented immigrants like the AB 60 Law.
Adding on to this she expresses that AB 60 is different because it is explicitly for undocumented immigrants. Moreover, she says, that it could lead them to become targets in hostile circumstances. She adds that many of her clients have been able to secure homes.
