Citizenship & Naturalization

San Diego Citizenship Attorneys

Practical, creative, and ethical solutions for most complex immigration goals.

Being a legal permanent resident (LPR) or green card holder in the United States is a luxury that individuals all over the world strive for. However, if you have been given lawful permanent residency status, you are definitely interested in applying for US citizenship through naturalization.

Becoming a U.S. citizen offers many benefits, including:

  • the right to vote;
  • strong and permanent protection from deportation;
  • access to jobs and social services not available to non-citizens; and
  • overall peace of mind.

At Jacobs & Schlesinger, our citizenship attorneys in San Diego have decades of experience in the field. We can help guide you through the process of naturalization.

How Does Naturalization Work?

Naturalization is the procedure through which a foreigner becomes a citizen of the United States. The process of citizenship is not easy. You must satisfy specific requirements, submit a comprehensive application, attend a naturalization interview, and pass an English and U.S. civics test.

Some of the requirements of naturalization include that you:

  • have a knowledge of U.S. civics and history;
  • take an oath of allegiance to the U.S.;
  • have the ability to write, read, and speak English;
  • are a person of good moral character;
  • have not been convicted of certain criminal acts;
  • are at least 18 years old (except active-duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces);
  • have resided for more than three months in the place of application;
  • have demonstrated continuous residence for the required period of time; and/or
  • have been a permanent resident of the U.S. for at least five years (or at least 3 years if your applying for naturalization based on your marriage to a U.S. citizen).

There are other specific requirements that may apply in certain cases, such as not having taken trips outside of the U.S. for more than six months in the past five years. Our team can assess your specific situation and make sure you qualify for naturalization.
