Katie Jo Keppinger is a senior attorney at Jacobs & Schlesinger LLP. Ms. Keppinger’s practice covers a broad spectrum of immigration matters. She represents clients in removal cases in Immigration Court; affirmative family-based immigration, naturalization, asylum, and other humanitarian-based cases before the Department of Homeland Security; and consular processing cases through U.S. Consulates abroad. Ms. Keppinger also represents clients in appeals before the Board of Immigration Appeals and the Administrative Appeals Office of Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Ms. Keppinger earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Robert D. Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon in 1998, and her Juris Doctor degree from Lewis & Clark Law School in 2004. During law school, she clerked for Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services, Legal Aid Services of Oregon, and Dolan Griggs LLP. She also served as Articles Editor of the Environmental Law Review and volunteered for the Northwest Environmental Defense Center and the Public Interest Law Project.
After law school, Ms. Keppinger worked as an immigration staff attorney and supervising attorney at the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, in Seattle, Washington. There, she represented people seeking asylum and other relief from deportation, and represented immigrant victims of domestic violence and other crimes. After she moved from the Pacific Northwest to southern California, and before joining Jacobs & Schlesinger LLP, Ms. Keppinger represented individuals and families in family- and humanitarian-based immigration matters as an associate attorney for a leading San Diego sole practitioner.
Although she has resided in San Diego, California, since 2006, Ms. Keppinger grew up in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Her father’s grandparents immigrated to the United States from northern Germany and settled in the Willamette Valley. Her mother’s parents immigrated to the United States from southern China and settled in eastern Oregon.
Ms. Keppinger is admitted to the State Bar of Washington and is licensed to practice law before the Supreme Court of Washington, the Department of Homeland Security, and Immigration Courts nationwide. During and after her undergraduate education at the University of Oregon, she traveled and volunteered in Mexico and Costa Rica, and is fluent in Spanish.
Outside the office, Ms. Keppinger enjoys spending time with her husband and son, as well as visiting her family in northern California and Oregon. She serves on the Board of Directors of a non-profit, cooperative preschool and is a novice birdwatcher, naturalist, and artist.More info
